A Man Who Keeps His Word!

Hi fellow Standers! It's encouragement time again. Here's another devotional written by Bob from Penn. Read on and stay encouraged! "The LORD has kept the promise He made: I have succeeded David my father and now I sit on the throne of Israel, just as the LORD promised, and I have built the temple for the Name of the LORD, the God of Israel.” I Kings 8:20 Have you noticed that when God tells His people what is going to happen, things happen just as He said they would? Throughout the Bible, over and over, we see how faithfully everything happens just as He said it would. Before the Last Supper, Jesus gave Peter and John specific instructions and they found things just as He had told them. Then came the day of Unleavened Bread on which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed. Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, "Go and make preparations for us to eat the Passover." "Where do you want us to prepare for it?" they asked. He replied, "As you enter the city, a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him to the house that he enters, and say to the owner of the house, 'The Teacher asks: Where is the guest room, where I may eat the Passover with My disciples?' He will show you a large upper room, all furnished. Make preparations there." They left and found things just as Jesus had told them. So they prepared the Passover. Luke 22:7-13 God is so faithful that often those who penned His word only tell what He said would happen. We can know for certain if God said it, then that is exactly the way it happened. For example, after Peter was accosted about the temple tax, Jesus made provision for paying it as told in Matthew’s Gospel. After Jesus and his disciples arrived in Capernaum, the collectors of the two-drachma tax came to Peter and asked, "Doesn't your teacher pay the temple tax?" "Yes, He does," he replied. When Peter came into the house, Jesus was the first to speak. "What do you think, Simon?" he asked. "From whom do the kings of the earth collect duty and taxes—from their own sons or from others?" "From others," Peter answered."Then the sons are exempt," Jesus said to him. "But so that we may not offend them, go to the lake and throw out your line. Take the first fish you catch; open its mouth and you will find a four-drachma coin. Take it and give it to them for my tax and yours." Matthew 17:24-27 That is all we are told. We don’t have to be told that Peter went and threw out his line, caught a fish, opened its mouth and found a four-drachma coin. We KNOW it happened just the way Jesus said it would. Imagine if any other person in the world’s history made such an outrageous suggestion as to how to obtain the required money to pay the tax! Would we need to be told whether the suggestion worked out? Of course! But when our Lord makes us a promise, we can be certain it will happen, and it will happen “just as He said.” Unfortunately, I must confess that I sometimes allow circumstances to cause doubt to grow in my heart and mind. That’s when I know I have started to walk by sight rather than by faith. Recently I had a particularly difficult day with difficult interactions. When I was alone again at the end of the day, I cried out to the Lord to help me. Then I took one of my Bibles in hand and asked Him to encourage me and open a passage that would speak to my troubled heart. The Bible fell open to Joshua 21. It is 45 verses long, and most of the verses provide the names of towns that were given to the Levites. As I was reading, my heart began to be disappointed because I could see that this wasn’t the kind of chapter that was going to build me up. Still, I persevered in my reading and the chapter ended with three incredible verses that I want to remember for the rest of my life, verses to remind me of the unfailing and perfect faithfulness of the awesome God that we serve. I hope these verses encourage you as they did me – to stand firm and wait for the fulfillment of every promise that God has given. Without a doubt, every one of His good promises will be fulfilled! "So the LORD gave Israel all the land he had sworn to give their forefathers, and they took possession of it and settled there. The LORD gave them rest on every side, just as he had sworn to their forefathers. Not one of their enemies withstood them; the LORD handed all their enemies over to them. Not one of all the LORD's good promises to the house of Israel failed; every one was fulfilled." Joshua 21:43-45

While We Are Waiting in the Waiting Room

Hi Standers! It's time once again. Here's another devotional written by Ruth from IN. Read on and stay encouraged! ************************* I believe that for those walking in obedience to Christ, waiting is perhaps one of the most difficult things. We wait on God for so many things... praying in faith that He will come through for us, yet not seeing answers for days, weeks, months... and in many cases, even years. Has God not heard us? Does He not care? Is He not capable of doing that which we ask? I came across an interesting passage of Scripture that speaks to this very issue. Jesus' friend Lazarus has become gravely ill and his sisters, Mary and Martha, have sent word to Jesus, so that He might come and heal Lazarus. When he [Jesus] heard this, Jesus said, "This sickness will not end in death. No, it is for God's glory so that God's Son may be glorified through it." Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. So when he heard that Lazarus was sick, he stayed where he was two more days, and then he said to his disciples, "Let us go back to Judea." John 11:4-7 If you've never read this story before, you might expect that last sentence to read somewhat differently... maybe more like this: "Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. So when he heard that Lazarus was sick, he rushed to be with them so that he might heal Lazarus as quickly as possible." But that's not what the verse says. This word "so" could also be translated, "therefore.""Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. Therefore, when he heard that Lazarus was sick, he stayed where he was two more days." He waited because He loved them. There are countless examples in Scripture of God choosing to wait before He intervenes: Goliath tormented the Israelite soldiers for 40 days before God brought a young boy named David to show that God is greater than any giant. The Israelites were in Egypt for 400 years before God brought them out of slavery. Abraham waited for 25 years before God gave him the son that He had promised. Daniel could have been rescued from the king BEFORE he got thrown into the den of lions, instead God waited until Daniel was actually IN the lion's den before He rescued him; and the same with Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego who were thrown into the fiery furnace. There is story after story after story in the Bible of God choosing to wait before He acts. God often waits so that His power may be shown in a more spectacular way. This is certainly the case in all of the above examples, and even in the story of Lazarus. God chose to wait long enough so that no one could dispute the intervention of the divine: no one but God could use a young boy to defeat a giant; no one but God could rescue a people enslaved by the most powerful country in the world; no one but God could cause a 90 year-old-woman to give birth; no one but God could shut the mouths of hungry lions, or cause three men to walk about in a fire unscathed. No one but God could cause a man who had been dead for four days to come back to life again. God loves us enough to want to teach us, to change us into the people that He desires us to be. What if a parent tells their children that they cannot eat their dessert until they had their dinner? Are they trying to punish their kids? Probably not. We want children to eat nutritious food before they have their special dessert. If they had their dessert first, they might not eat the nutritious food. Parents delay dessert because they love their kids. God loves us far more than any earthly parent will ever love their child. He tarries in answering our requests because He loves us enough to want us to change, to learn to trust Him, to truly believe in Him. He wants to give us the nutritious sustenance that our faith needs to grow strong. Ultimately, Jesus raises Lazarus from the dead. "Take away the stone," he said. "But Lord," said Martha, the sister of the dead man, "by this time there is a bad odor, for he has been there four days." Then Jesus said, "Did I not tell you that if you believe, you will see the glory of God?" So they took away the stone. Then Jesus looked up and said, "Father, I thank you that you have heard me. I knew that you always hear me, but I said this for the benefit of the people standing here, that they may believe that you sent me." When he had said this, Jesus called in a loud voice, "Lazarus, come out!" The dead man came out, his hands and feet wrapped with strips of linen, and a cloth wrapped around his face. Jesus said to them, "Take off the grave clothes and let him go." John 11:39-44 I am thankful that God does hear. And I choose to be thankful that often He waits to answer so that His power may be made known, that we may marvel at His awesome might... and believe. I'm thankful that He loves me enough to wait to answer my prayers in His timetable, and not mine.

Trust Him Again

Hi Standers! It's another day once again. Here's another devotional written by David from NC. Read on and stay encouraged! ************************* Recall the story of Jesus walking on the water. I heard a wonderful sermon recently that put together the details of this miraculous gospel account. We need to jump from the three accounts in Matthew 14, Mark 6 and John 6 to see the whole story, but you’ll be blessed as a result. Later that night, the boat was in the middle of the lake, and he was alone on land. He saw the disciples straining at the oars, because the wind was against them. Mark 6: 47-48 I can’t tell you how many times I’ve just read over that without catching a key detail. Jesus was still on land, the disciples were in the middle of the lake (probably three miles away given the size of that lake, which was the sea of Galilee), and yet Jesus SAW them straining. You may not be able to see Jesus in the storm of your marriage troubles, but never forget He does see you and He sees you straining at the oars. Now look at the account as told in Matthew. Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowd. After he had dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray. Later that night, he was there alone, and the boat was already a considerable distance from land, buffeted by the waves because the wind was against it. Matthew 14: 22-24 Notice also that Jesus MADE them get into the boat while He stayed behind to pray. Was Jesus caught off guard by the storm that whipped up in the middle of the lake (the sea of Galilee)? Of course not. Jesus set this all up, because He knew the miracles that He would perform. Have you ever thought that the Lord allowed your marriage struggles so that He would get the glory at some point? Just as Jesus walked out on the water to meet the disciples in the boat that was being buffeted by waves, Jesus will not delay in showing you His presence in your hour of need. Just keep your eyes on Him! Peter learned the lesson of keeping his eyes on Jesus. “Come,” he said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!” Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?” Matthew 14: 29-31 When Peter had his eyes on Jesus, he was fine. When he took them off Jesus and focused on the storm, he sank. Do you see the point here? There is no water that you cannot rise above and walk on top of when you keep your eyes on Jesus. Go to Him because there is no sea or storm that He does not place under His feet. Keep your eyes on Him and invite him fully into your life (your “boat”). But he said to them, “It is I; don’t be afraid.” Then they were willing to take him into the boat, and immediately the boat reached the shore where they were heading. John 6: 20-21 You may not know where to turn today and there seems to be so many storms raging against you and your marriage. Jesus is calling your name and telling you to not be afraid, but to experience His peace you must take Him into your boat and surrender everything to Him. Notice the last piece of this incredible story. When they took Jesus into their boat, they IMMEDIATELY reached their destination. Remember, they were still a long way from shore. This was no small miracle, but it gets lost in the whole story of Jesus walking on the water. To me, this just shows that the whole episode was orchestrated by our Lord to teach the disciples a lesson. Once the disciples saw Jesus clearly and allowed him into their boat, the lesson was learned. Yes, we will have difficult moments in this journey with Jesus because we have a tendency to take our eyes off Him. Cry out to Jesus in those moments just as Peter cried out, “Lord, save me!” Jesus is ready to respond to anyone honestly crying out to Him for rescue. Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?” Matthew 14: 31

Counterfeits

Hi standers! It's a Monday once again. Here's another devotional written by David from NC. Read and be encouraged! ************************* One of the great tricks of the enemy is his ability to offer a counterfeit version of many things that God offers us. Satan offers adulterous and sexually immoral relationships as counterfeits of God’s design of a one-flesh marriage for life. Satan gets others focused on their self-righteous moral lives as a counterfeit way to be right with God. Satan offers counterfeit solutions to addiction and bondage that don’t require us to confess sin or repent. Let the message we hear today be loud and clear: Satan’s counterfeits do not please God, and God will stand up for the holiness of His Name. We never know when (for some it is sooner rather than later), but make no mistake that God will expose counterfeits and sin. Jonah disobeyed God and ran away from God’s calling, and yet he apparently could find rest sleeping in the ship he was on (sailing away from Ninevah, where God told him to go). "Then the LORD sent a great wind on the sea, and such a violent storm arose that the ship threatened to break up. All the sailors were afraid and each cried out to his own god. And they threw the cargo into the sea to lighten the ship. But Jonah had gone below deck, where he lay down and fell into a deep sleep." Jonah 1:4-5 It is amazing that Jonah was able to find rest in his rebellion. To many of us, it may appear that our prodigals are comfortable and "at rest" in their rebellion, but read the remainder of Jonah if you do not know how God dealt with his sin (Jonah is 4 short chapters). The counterfeit rest our prodigal may be experiencing right now will end. Continue to pray for your prodigal and all prodigals that God would move in their lives to wake them from their sinful slumber. For Jonah, it took a mighty storm and even that was not enough, for Jonah simply asked to be tossed into the sea rather than repent. God had to get his attention the hard way. On the other hand, Jesus offers rest that is free for the taking. "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest." Matthew 11:28 "Then he got into the boat and his disciples followed him. Without warning, a furious storm came up on the lake, so that the waves swept over the boat. But Jesus was sleeping. The disciples went and woke him, saying, 'Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!'" Matthew 8:23-25 Notice, Jesus sleeping on the boat during the storm was nothing like Jonah sleeping on the boat during the storm. The storm for Jonah was caused by the LORD to bring Jonah to repentance. The storm while Jesus was sleeping was allowed to increase the faith of the disciples. Jesus rebuked the wind and waves, it was calm, and the disciples learned an important lesson: even with storms raging in our lives, we are safe if we are in Jesus’ boat. If you are not a follower of Jesus Christ, please do not wait in giving your life to Him and getting in "His boat." "...Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name, you are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze." Isaiah 43:1b-2 It is so comforting to me to know that though Satan may try to counterfeit what God does, but God decides where the limit is. If we go back in Exodus, we see that many of the miraculous signs that God performed through Moses and Aaron in the presence of Pharaoh were able to be counterfeited by Pharaoh’s magicians (i.e., counterfeited by Satan). But after a few plagues, God decided to end the counterfeits (starting with the plague of gnats in Exodus 8). "...All the dust throughout the land of Egypt became gnats. But when the magicians tried to produce gnats by their secret arts, they could not..." Exodus 8:17-18 Even when brokenness finally hits home as it does at some point for all believers (and it will for our prodigals, so don’t stop praying!), Satan offers a counterfeit version of brokenness, called "worldly sorrow" in the Bible, which does not produce the repentance that God demands. "Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret, but worldly sorrow brings death." 2 Corinthians 7:10 Please pray for your prodigal, and pray for prodigals around the world, that he/she would have a life-changing touch by the Holy Spirit this very day. Repentance will surely follow when the Lord touches the heart. Sharon
